DAVE JOHNSTON, B.A., PSY.
DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTION, JOHNSTON GOLF ACADEMY
"Minimum Effort, Maximum Results"
Foregoing a career in medicine (psychiatry), Dave decided that golf offered a perfect arena to study all aspects of human behaviour.
After obtaining a degree in Psychology, he spent a year "picking the brains" of various golf instructors throughout Canada and the United States. Comparing notes at the end of the year, he noticed that the advice expounded by one teacher was often dismissed as irrelevant or even totally contradicted by another teacher. When asked whose theories he subscribes to, Dave responds by saying "...everyone and no one. I prefer to take each student on an individual basis. If the student prefers a specific teaching method, then that's how we proceed. If the student has never taken a lesson before, then we work together to find the most effective approach based on the student's goals. I let the student tell me how he/she learns and then look for elements in various methods that facilitate that approach. "
Dave has been teaching golf for over 25 years. He has given over 10,000 lessons. His straightforward approach to the golf swing has helped students understand and correct their own swing.
In addition to the programs offered at the Bloomington Downs Golf Club, Dave has developed programs for Seneca College of Applied Arts & Technology, the Township of Whitchurch/Stouffville, the Y.M.C.A. and the Town of Aurora.
He has conducted numerous clinics for Hewlett Packard, Manulife Financial, Zurich Insurance and other corporations.
Dave is available for private and semi-private instruction by appointment.
